Evening Vespers

The clouds gathered

Like a host of angels

At the dusk of day

Welcoming me home

While the crickets

Held their nightly

Choir practice.

The Return of Dignity

Layers with raw edges

Blending into dusky horizons

Of velvet integrity.

“If we’re wrapping ourselves up to conceal any vulnerability, whatever happens to us has to go through all those extra layers. Sometimes love doesn’t even reach where we truly live.”
― Alexandra Katehakis

“To write poetry, like sincere poetry, it is like performing heart surgery on yourself without anesthesia…in public…You are peeling back layers. You are dissecting yourself…You do not know what they [the audience] is going to do when you reach into yourself and rip out your organs to be displayed”
― Amir Sulaiman

“Layer by layer art strips life bare.”

― Robert Musil

Like the Rain Does

“There’s a child who never sleeps in my old town. She looks around her with empty eyes that never cry.
Her mother never held her..
– Like the wind does.
And her father never loved her..
– Like the rain does..
– Like the rain does..

Her legs run through mountains at dusk. And the grass knows exactly her body when she lies and falls asleep.
And when she lies and falls asleep the clouds won’t go away. They stay staring at her closed pupils..
– Like the rain does..

I never had the wonderful opportunity to meet her.
But her smile was always telling me that we already know each other..
-Like the rain does..

I never saw her again since I left town. Somebody told me that she finally got wings and flies..
– Like the wind does.”
